Matteo Fania, born in 1975 in San Marco in Lamis (Foggia), Italy, is a versatile musician and composer. He began his academic training in his hometown and later pursued studies in composition, lyric singing, and classical guitar at the G. Frescobaldi Conservatory in Ferrara and the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan from 1994 to 2004.
Later on, also embarked on the study of saxophone, piano, bass clarinet, and double bass, further expanding his musical repertoire and skills. These additional instruments became integral parts of his musical journey, allowing him to explore new dimensions of sound and expression, and even incorporate photography into his artistic pursuits
For over 20 years, he has collaborated with librettist Giovanni Privitera in composing lyric operas, including premieres at renowned festivals like the Shakespeare Festival in Ferrara in 1998. In 2013, his debut as a composer came with the lyric ballet opera “The Fantastic Knight Don Quixote,” performed at theaters such as Principal de Zamora and Sanchinarro in Madrid. This opera was also staged at Quijano Theater in Ciudad Real in 2015 as part of the Quixote Year celebrations.
Since 2020, Matteo has collaborated with the Tête à Tête Contemporary Opera Festival in London, premiering operas like “Siddhartha” in 2020 and “The Castle of Crossed Destinies” in 2021, alongside Giovanni Privitera. In September 2022, he presented his opera “Don Quixote” at the Instituto Cervantes in Utrecht, the Netherlands, under the supervision of the Spanish Embassy in the Netherlands.
Throughout his career, Matteo has maintained an ongoing collaboration with ethnomusicologist Salvatore Villani, focusing on popular music research. From 1995 to 2007, he also had notable collaborations as a chorister singer in various theaters and opera festivals, including the Macerata Opera Festival, Arena di Verona, and theaters in northern Italy.
Additionally, Matteo has served as a soloist in the “Opera Domani” program organized by A.S.L.I.C.O. in Spain, alongside pianists Víctor Pérez and Mario Alonso. He has showcased his talent as a guitarist, performing duo concerts with tenor Davide Cucchetti.
Since 2011, Matteo has been an administrator at Theorikon SL, specializing in cultural management and production. His responsibilities include managing projects and events related to music, theater, and photography. He oversees the Theater Workshop at the Cultural Center of the Soto del Real Town Council in Madrid, organizes Municipal Schools of Music in Nuevo Baztan and Paracuellos de Jarama Town Councils in Madrid, and Los Navalmorales Town Council in Toledo.
Currently, Matteo is working on a research project exploring the intersection of physical music and neuroscience, pushing the boundaries of his artistic field.
