Karen Lane – professional singer and contemporary vocal coach, initially trained as a Speech and Language Therapist at Curtin University, in Perth Western Australia. Karen’s academic background in Voice Science, provides her with the theoretical foundation and knowledge to enhance her teaching philosophy and practice. Based in Sydney by 1991, early in her teaching career, she undertook further studies learning methodologies such as Estill Voice Training from Jo Estill herself, in the early 90’s and looked in depth at Seth Rigg’s Speech Level Singing. Deciding that the “one model fits all singers” was a limiting viewpoint, she decide to embrace the best from several teaching methodologies and teach from a multi-faceted vocal pedagogy. She has been an Associate Lecture in Voice on the B.Mus course at Surrey University and currently runs a busy private vocal coaching studio in London. She teaches Rock, Pop, Soul and Jazz Singing at the City Literary Institute in Covent Garden and has run group Voice workshops for corporate clients including Citibank and Bank of America in London, Ireland and Zurich. Karen has been an invited presenter at The Second International Jazz Voice Conference in Helsinki in October 2017. Her singing career began in Sydney early 90s as a soul funk stylist. Later she developed an interest in jazz learning repertoire and jazz language “on the job” through performance residencies. On arriving in London in 1999, she focused her energies on jazz singing and established herself as a respected recording artist. In particular her debut “Once In a Lifetime” release in 2002 garnered the attention and positive reviews of the International jazz press and radio. Her extensive live experience as a singer informs her own vocal coaching. She is particularly interested in vocal health from the viewpoint of elite professional performance, as well as vocal rehabilitation. Karen has recorded and self-produced 5 albums to critical acclaim, is an accomplished songwriter and has a love of Brazilian music. Her music has received radio airplay in the USA and Canada and on Jazz FM, BBC London Live and BBC Radio 2 grabbing the attention of Michael Parkinson. Career highlights have included International Jazz festivals, regular slots at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Soho and selling out the main room at Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club in London. Karen has been delighted to find herself singing in places she’d never imagined she would visit: including Sicily, Portafino, Nice, Monte Carlo, Evian, Berlin, Cape Town South Africa and Bucharest. Described in Musician Magazine: “ I know of no one else who sings with what I can only describe as her demure abandon. It's wholehearted but at the same time restrained, precisely phrased but not over-studied, a fine and distinctive singer." Dave Gelly "Sensually funky and soulful." Jazz UK Magazine - John Fordham
