Dagobert (dog-oh-bear) is a Picture book about a mouse! He lives in a broken violin in the crawlspace of a beautiful house. Things become dire and he must save himself and some new friends when he steals an oyster- and a sea falls out.
Rendered in rich multimedia cut paper collage, the picture book draws visual and narrative inspiration from the textiles of the Vienna Werkstatte, mythology, and the idea of eternal return. The story and illustration create a surreal, playful, and dreamlike story that I made hoping to capture the affection of the child I once was.
I made Dagobert for my BFA capstone project, and developed it from the conception, to the writing, to the dummy drafts right down to the production. The picture book includes three folded inserts where readers can open the drawings themselves to reveal new images and text at important story beats.
An important aspect of this project was the designing of its exhibition space as well as merchandise sold at the exhibition.
The space itself utilized hand painted laser cut MDF to try to mimic immersive and whimsical bookstore and library displays.
Merchandise includes letterpress bookmarks, sticker sheets, and postcards.
