Case Studies are a great way to grab the public's attention and sum up some of your most successful projects. I produced quite a few of these while at NGS, Films & Graphics. This has become one of my favorite types of projects. uniE613 Racism: the Real Reason I Left the South
Anti-racism memoir. Published in December 2019. Sample: The South is not as pretty a place as people would like to believe. Sure, the grass is green, the hills are rolling, and the honeysuckle vines smell sweet. But, there is nothing romantic or glorious about racism and prejudice – both of which still run rampant. I’m a Southerner, a seventh-generation Georgian to be exact. And I’m proud of that fact. I’m as white as it gets. Fair-skinned and freckled, I live that privilege day in, and day out. If I ever wanted to forget that advantage, I never had to look too far to remember. Racism is everywhere. All we have to do is be aware, no matter what our skin color or ethnicity is. It does us no good to try and ignore it. To buy into the belief that ‘this is just the way it is’ further promotes racism. And I am a firm believer in, ‘we are either a part of the solution or a part of the problem’. Prejudice is deeply ingrained. Consequently, it isn’t likely that racism will be stomped out easily or quickly. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t make damn sure it is. Fear has forever been used to control societies. The most powerful individuals know this well. If they can use that fear against us, to manipulate us, they will. That’s how they maintain their dominance and rob those who are too naive to see what is really happening. Thus, fear is our greatest enemy, with ignorance being a close second. This is why it is so important that we educate ourselves. My father often said, “Once you learn to read and write the rest is up to you.” He only had an eighth-grade education. But, he was wise in many ways. We are responsible for what we feed our minds. I’ve always loved history and my first degree focused on America. The more I read, the more embarrassed I became by what we, as white folks, had done. There’s nothing glorious about manifest destiny, especially when you wipe out an indigenous race and enslave another. But that is our truth. So many people don’t want to face this shame so they push it deep down and try to bury it. But it festers inside us all to some extent. I’ve come to believe that this is why we don’t have open and honest discussions regarding racism and prejudice. This shame and embarrassment may be why some try to claim it doesn’t exist. Whether we witness it first-hand or experience it in some other form, it chips away at our souls and makes us less human. We are less able to trust one another and trust is the foundation of any healthy relationship. Without the capacity to truly trust and love one another, we fail to be our best selves and ultimately our most successful society. The sooner we can eradicate racism, the stronger our country will be.
