Hi, I'm Sophia! I graduated from Indiana University in 2021, where I earned a BFA in Graphic Design and a minor in Art History. I also dabbled in many Informatics courses where I developed a greater understanding of the mechanics of web design. While in Bloomington, I worked for a year as lead graphic design intern of the WonderLab Museum's marketing team and for three years as in-house graphic designer of the Indiana Environmental Reporter. Since then, I worked for over a year as a graphic and UX/UI designer at The Deciding Factor, a digital design agency based in Mason, OH. While there, I served several B2B clients in the health care, label-making, technology/software, and medical device industries with a variety of print, digital, and web design needs. In addition to the skills and interests I curated during my education and career, I have an appreciation of folklore and horror fiction which translates into a passion for storytelling. Much of my work takes a narrative approach as I aim to make metaphorical and abstract concepts visually comprehensible and accessible to audiences.

    uniE621 "These Days" Graphic Novel
"These Days" is a horror graphic novel I wrote and illustrated for my 2021 BFA thesis. This project is the culmination of my love of folklore and horror fiction and my passion for illustration and storytelling. Inspired by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, "These Days" is set in a world that is parallel to our own and tells the story of a town suffering widespread damage from an unseen beast. uniE621 "The Interlopers" Instagram Story
The goal of this project was to reimagine a short narrative in an Instagram story format in a way that would keep viewers' short attention spans engaged with the content. I chose "The Interlopers", by Saki, which is a suspenseful thriller. The storytelling in my designs stems largely from the color palette and style of illustrations. I chose a bright, jarring color palette and used a sharp, angular illustration style to capture the unsettling, dangerous tone of the story. uniE621 "Mulberry the Helping Hen" Children's Book
"Mulberry the Helping Hen: Working with Chickens for a Healthier Earth" is a children's book that aims to educate kids about the environmental benefits of raising chickens. It was written by Emily Miles, a podcast producer who consulted for the Indiana Environmental Reporter. She adapted the IER story "Urban chicken movement provides green backyard pest control" into a kid-friendly tale which I then designed and illustrated into a picture book. uniE621 "Growing in Place" Podcast Branding
“Growing in Place”, created and written by Violet Baron, is a podcast about how farmers and food workers adapted to the global COVID-19 pandemic. I designed the logo and brand for this podcast, including episode cover art, social media banners, and an icon set. To build the brand, I created a flexible set of icons that could be used in different formats. The hand-drawn icons are personal and tangible and the overlapping of these elements creates new interactions in each composition, demonstrating the versatility of the illustration system and conveying the human perspective of the podcast. uniE621 47th Annual Panegyri Greek Festival Promotional Poster
The poster I designed to promote the 2022 Panegyri, the 47th annual Greek festival fundraiser hosted by the Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. I juxtaposed the Ancient Greek ruins in the photo with modern, graphic typography to create a dynamic visual that would pique viewers’ attention. The original photo is by Ela Abbou (@elaabbou) on Unsplash and the church vector at the bottom of the poster was supplied by the client. uniE621 “Themester: Remembering and Forgetting” Poster
Themester is an Indiana University program in which the IU College of Arts and Sciences chooses a timely and topical theme that encompasses academic courses, lectures, exhibits, and other public events to engage students and the broader Bloomington community. I designed this poster for the 2019 theme “Remembering and Forgetting.” My concept was to create a tangible representation of memory which is an otherwise invisible process that occurs within the brain. Human memories are easily altered and are never quite as clear as the original experiences from which they originate; they change with time and grow hazier as the processes of "forgetting" and "remembering" overlap. The clock image relates back to IU because it’s based on a clock from the campus but it also speaks to the passage of time that is inevitably connected to memory. The further in the background, the less descriptive and more smudged the clocks become, and many variations of the same clock intersect, just as "remembering" and "forgetting" converge in our brains. The text lockup/Themester logo was provided by the client. graphicdesigner poster posterdesigner adobeillustrator adobephotoshop illustrator
    uniE621 “Themester: Democracy” Poster
Themester is an Indiana University program in which the IU College of Arts and Sciences chooses a timely and topical theme that encompasses academic courses, lectures, exhibits, and other public events to engage students and the broader Bloomington community. I designed this poster for the 2020 theme “Democracy.” My concept was based on the role of the protestor, or a person who rises up to stand for civil liberties and human rights. I moved beyond the literal image of a protester and toward a more abstract representation of the act of protest. The quotation mark, though a functional marker of dialogue, can also symbolize peoples’ voices, or their act of speaking out. I abstracted multiple quotation marks to communicate the sense of diversity that should exist in a democracy. The pattern I created out of these different sizes and styles of quotes represents this idea of a rich dialogue.
