Hello, my family immigrated from the United States in August 2020, where I spent years as a retoucher, photographer, and educator. My years of experience working as a photographer for Reuters, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, and as a retoucher for high-profile publications would make me an excellent member of your imaging team.
Since arriving in the Netherlands, I have been photographing for fashion brands like Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld, and Tommy Hilfiger. I photograph clothing, shoes, and accessories like bags and jewelry. I am proud that I am one of the only photographers in the studios that can step into any needed role for the day. I am regularly part of a retouching team working on advertising campaigns for Coca-Cola, where we make generic computer renders of bottles and cans look like they belong in lifestyle photography.
Before arriving in The Netherlands, I was a freelance photographer who worked with The New York Times, Reuters, and others. I often covered Presidential politics since Iowa is an important state to get the party nomination. I published a photography book called “Fight Night,” which explores Mixed Martial Arts in Iowa photographed over five years.
I was responsible for editing and retouching images for a broad range of magazines while providing prepress and pre-flighting on tight deadlines. Aside from being responsible for the cornerstone title, Better Homes & Gardens, I worked on fashion brands like InStyle and More, and food titles like Real Simple and AllRecipes. The image work would include food retouching to make recipes look their best, product matching, skin retouching, and especially interiors. I would match walls and trim to specific paint colors from a swatch book and balance images across several pages. I never knew what I would be working on each day, so I needed to be well-versed in multiple photo editing skills and techniques.
During my time with Meredith, I became one of the most respected members of the department. The BH&G staff counted on me as an asset that could improve what they had produced and regularly said, “Brian can fix that.” I began the formal information exchange between premedia, art directors, and photographers by scheduling job shadowing days. The dialogues led to improvements in the photographic processes, which created greater efficiencies and better photography overall. I earned a reputation for managing multiple projects while providing quality that exceeded expectations and meeting demanding schedules.
I was also an adjunct professor at Des Moines Area Community College. I taught an introductory class called Photoshop for Photographers and an Advanced Imaging Techniques class. I created and developed the curriculum for the advanced course, which focused on complex retouching, compositing, and color theory. It was the first time the school offered an advanced Photoshop class.
