Daniel Shores has worked as a recording, mixing, and mastering engineer for over 24 years. Based in Northern
Virginia, Daniel records in studios and concert halls, in the field across the country and around the world. He has
applied his talents to over 250 full length commercial releases, as well as numerous singles for artists and for
several labels including Sono Luminus, Steinway and Sons, Avie, Sony, Decca, RCA, and others.
Daniel’s focus is always on capturing the sound in the best possible way, presenting the sound of the artist and
their instruments, with as little post production needed as possible. He has carried this approach into his work in
immersive audio, having recorded over 30 albums in native immersive audio, with releases in 5.1, 9.1, 9.1 Auro
3D, and 7.1.4 Atmos. Daniel focuses on the position of the musicians or sound sources and choosing the right
mics while recording them in an immersive space over expanding an otherwise stereo experience.
While focusing most of his time on acoustic music, Daniel is no stranger to working in an amplified world either.
Whether it is adding live or programmed electronics to albums, setting up numerous guitar amps for an electric
violin, or plugging in his own bass to lay down some tracks, Daniel’s love of music has truly driven the idea of
genre out of his vocabulary. It allows a view of every project as art regardless of the instrumentation. Daniel has
taken this belief into mixing such projects as BT’s “Electronic Opus” for immersive audio.
Along with receiving stellar reviews in publications such as Gramophone, Stereophile, and others, over twenty of
the albums Daniel has recorded or mixed have gone on to receive GRAMMY nominations in their respective
categories.
Daniel has been honored to receive GRAMMY nominations in the fields of Immersive Audio and Best Engineered
Classical. Daniel has been awarded 2 Latin GRAMMYs as the mixing and mastering engineer for albums in the
Best Classical category, and most recently awarded a GRAMMY for his work as the mixing and mastering
engineer on the Best Classical Vocal Solo album. Annually, albums that Daniel has engineered appear on the
“Best Of” lists around the country and internationally, and have been featured in those lists by NPR, The New
York Times, and numerous others.
In addition to being a full-time engineer, Daniel has served as an adjunct faculty member at Shenandoah
Conservatory in their Music Production and Recording Technology department for the last 14 years. There, he
teaches location recording, beginning mastering techniques, immersive audio, and recently taught an elective on
D.I.Y. Studio treatment.
