My name is Eric Bent and I am an artist, animator and musician based in Montreal, Quebec. Originally from Gatineau, Quebec in the Ottawa area I graduated from the Film Animation program at Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema (based out of Concordia University) in 2012. I have been drawing and creating artwork for essentially my whole life, with my main subject matter being animals and monsters.
My interests have always laid more into the realms of the fantastic, usually dealing with imaginary worlds and creatures. My main influences are animators and comics artists and illustrators from the early to mid 20th Century, such as Basil Wolverton, Milt Gross, Max Ernst, Joan Miro, to name many others. For me all these artists have the commonality that they are inspired by issues and objects that exist in the real world but that twisted in interesting ways to emphasize the more complex themes underneath.
At first I was using these fantastic settings to tell pretty simple character driven narratives, but more and more they are have been showing themes regarding the human condition, psychology and philosophy. Some of these are reflections of the fact that I myself am on the Autism Spectrum.
My work has been shown at numerous international film festivals such as The Sprout Film Festival in New York (where one of my films was shown in the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Oska Bright in the UK. I have had a profile written about me in the Concordian in Montreal and my involvement in Spectrum Productions has been written about in the Montreal Gazette and showcased on the CBC.
