Isaac Ruth is an award-winning writer and director working in film, TV, and digital media. Having been an editor, director of photography, composer, colorist, sound designer, and producer in numerous projects, he specializes in having a keen eye toward all facets of filmmaking. I would know because I’m him. Hi. It’s me. After being scouted by Apple for his specialty in short-form horror, Isaac worked with Media Arts Lab to pitch and develop Apple’s first shot-on-iPhone short horror film, THOSE THAT FOLLOW, eventually attaching director Parkpoom Wongpoom (SHUTTER) to direct and shoot in Thailand. Isaac assisted in developing the story, writing the English version of the script for client approval and subtitle translation, and overseeing the project to ensure brand safety as well as genre and audience expectations. The short film went on to win multiple awards and garner over 11 million views, becoming one of Apple's most successful projects. In 2018, Isaac's feature script SEARCHERS was optioned for development after a successful run on the Blacklist as well as several festivals, with Netflix's involvement soon to follow. It was developed into a mini-series that was put on hold during the beginning of the 2020 pandemic. He has since began development through his own company, Ruthless Stories, and created a proof-of-concept short film for the project which has earned wide critical acclaim and has since been purchased by ALTER. During the pandemic, Isaac spent his time writing and producing short films such as AFTER HOURS and THE FEEDING, winning multiple awards, placing in dozens of festivals, and garnering hundreds of thousands of views on social media. Isaac’s extensive work with Square Enix included not only the creation of their 7-part Starter Guide Series, creating original characters, writing each episode, and directing voice actors, but also the campaign for their latest expansion Dawntrail. The pitch for Dawntrail included the creation of the fictional Board of Turalism, which was eventually awarded and starred Rhys Darby as the comical Interim Deputy Director of Turalism. Isaac then went on to write the entirety of the Board of Turalism website, spoofing other tourism websites as well as creating dozens of easter eggs and inside jokes for the FFXIV Online community. uniE613 League of Legends | Hounds of Iron Cinematic
When Riot games were looking to announce their new League of Legends champion, Naafiri, they were looking to capture the attention of gamers far and wide. I worked with We Are Royale to help create a visually arresting and utterly bonkers deep dive into the surreal psyche of a breaking mind. My horror background was incredibly useful here, as we wanted to push the limits of what the League of Legends audience was familiar and comfortable with. We were met with a resounding "yes thank you more please," with the general consensus that this was the best game cinematic the company had released in years.
uniE613 Final Fantasy XIV Online: Starter Guide Series
To help ease in new adventurers, Square Enix teamed up with frequent collaborator We Are Royale to create a seven-part Starter Guide Series, exploring the basics of FFXIV Online. I was hired to write, co-direct, and edit each episode, taking on the challenge of not only pinpointing game mechanics to focus on, but also overseeing and directing each VO and game capture session. The series was met with open arms by veteran gamers and newbies alike. View We Are Royale's case study for more information: https://www.twine.net/signin
uniE613 Those That Follow | Apple's First Shot-On-iPhone Short Horror Film
After being scouted by Apple for his specialty in short-form horror, I worked with Media Arts Lab to pitch and develop Apple’s first shot-on-iPhone short horror film, THOSE THAT FOLLOW, eventually attaching director Parkpoom Wongpoom (SHUTTER) to direct and shoot in Thailand. uniE613 Final Fantasy XIV Online: Dawntrail
I was heavily involved in the pitch with We Are Royale to create the Board of Turalism, a tongue-in-cheek farcical tourism promo package advertising visitors to come visit Tural, the newest area available in FFXIV Online. The pitch was awarded and I went on to create several scripts for acclaimed comedian Rhys Darby who took on the role of the Interim Deputy Director of Turalism. I additionally wrote the majority of the content for the TourTural.com promo website, created characters and story arcs, and edited several of Rhys Darby's promo videos.
