My name is David Franzke and I am a Sound Designer and Composer with 30 years’ experience. I graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Drama Production in 1992. Since then I have forged a career in the Performing and Creative Arts across a range of areas such as Film, Video Art, Dance, Theatre, Installation, Opera and Puppetry. My contribution to the Live Arts has been both technical and creative, and I am confident I have the knowledge and skills required for the position.
The majority of my work has been in live theatre and Video Art Installations. Some of my credits include The Malthouse Theatre, Ilbijerri, The Melbourne Theatre Company, Balletlab, Ranters Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre Company, Theatreworks, La Mama, Black Swan Theatre Company and Chunky Move.
I have worked on installations with artists such as Sally Smart, David Rosetzky and Daniel Crooks. I sound designed and composed for the Cate Blanchett portrait that is currently displayed in The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
I have done numerous works with First Nations people, including The Torch Project (Steve Payne), which toured nationally, Blak Inside (Playbox) and Ilbijerri Theatre Company with Wesley Enoch and Rachel Mazza as Artistic Directors.
I have won several awards for my work. I am the recipient of six Greenroom awards for most Outstanding Sound Design and Composition for Mainstage Theatre Companies. These include Pompeii LA, Melancholia, Away, Picnic at Hanging Rock and Because the Night- all produced by The Malthouse Theatre Company and directed by Matthew Lutton. In 2000 I was the recipient of Most Outstanding Contribution to Technical Production. I have been nominated for two Helpmann awards for The Sydney Theatre Company and Malthouse Theatre Company.
My career has also included feature films, live mixing and producing. I composed the scores for Acolytes (2007), X (2008). I have done extensive mix work and producing for Harvey Sutherland, with the most recent event being a large scale concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre which I mixed live. Also I mixed and produced the soundtrack for a major work by Deakin University’s Motion Lab “The Earth Above” in 2023.
I have also worked for many small companies such as Ranters Theatre Company and Blackhole Theatre Company which has seen me responsible for the sound for their shows and short films that have toured nationally and internationally.
