This was completed as a project during my audio engineering education at the Institute of Audio Research, a 9 month program that I finished in 2015 in New York City. The assignment was to pick a video, strip the audio track, and re-create every sound. I decided to use an animated short from Pixar, and compose my own music in addition to recording voice over (with the help of two friends) and using sound effects from a library.
This project presented many challenges - scoring the music to picture is always a big challenge for me, but is ultimately the most rewarding aspect. As this is an animation of a children’s story, there are lots of fantastical elements and visuals, which meant that I had to get creative in terms of creating appropriate sound effects that started from real or synthesized sounds (some examples are @ 3:25, the child knocks on the giant star, @ 1:06 the child floats up to the moon’s surface, or @ 4:25 as the child rakes up the mini stars).
This was one of the most interesting and satisfying projects for me to complete because of the challenge presented by replacing all sound effects and music, while also capturing the original essence and playfulness of the story. It combined my attention to detail, problem solving, and musical creativity with a piece that allowed all of my personal styles to shine through.…animation sounddesign musicscore
