Lanie Niide is a contemporary composer and pianist in Kansas City, Missouri. Born in Honolulu and raised in Kapa’a, Hawaii, her Hawaiian background, as well as her Asian inheritance has major roots in her compositions. As a transgender woman composer, she draws on inspiration from her personal journey of self-discovery and transformation, aiming to create compositions with a sense of unseen identity and resilience. Niide studied at James Madison University and graduated with a Bachelor of Music in 2024. While studying composition at James Madison University, her composition City Above the Storm was selected to be performed by the JMU Wind Ensemble as the winner of the New Music for Wind Ensemble composition competition in 2023, as well as her composition Bon was selected to be performed by the Symphony Orchestra as the winner of the New Music for Orchestra composition competition in 2024.
