uniE621 Xorakus Board Game - Terrain Tiles
These were a set of illustrations that I did for the terrain tiles in the the board game, Xorakus. As with all of the Xorakus illustrations, these required a fair amount of world building / concept art. One of the big considerations for these illustrations was scale. The various environments may be drastically different in scale, but they need to flow together as a continuous map. However, the tiles also need to have a lot of unique and interesting variation. I used a couple of strategies to increase the continuity, such as adding trees around the edges of the tiles that are roughly the same color and size, and keeping the light source consistent across all of the tiles. In addition to choosing very different types of spaces, I used pattern and color to make each tile unique and interesting. illustrator environmentalillustrations
    uniE621 Bone Yard
This was one of the terrain tile illustrations in the board game, Xorakus. It's a digital drawing that I made using Adobe software on the iPad Pro. I used a lot of found objects and junk yard photos as references to draw the outlines of this detailed junk pile. I also added a few fun details like the green worm-like creature hiding amongst the debris, which is an homage to the worm-like creature in the Death Star garbage chute in Star Wars. When adding color I started with a rusty brown color because I wanted that to be the dominant color. Then I used other colors to help some of the individual items pop out. I added a few of the little green tree shapes, which look more like small shrubs here. Finally, I added shadows, which are cast at the same angle across all of the tiles. The shadows also help to show that some items are on top of other items and create a sense of depth. illustrator
    uniE621 Swamp
This was one of the terrain tile illustrations in the board game, Xorakus. It's a digital drawing that I made using Adobe software on the iPad Pro. After looking at a few reference images of swamps from above, I sketched out a few rough outlines of where the land and water would be. Then I began adding color, starting with a deep green color because I wanted that to be the dominant color. Then, introduced the steely grey for the water, which blends into the brighter green of the algae bloom. Then, I began adding vegetation, like the little green tree shapes and purply flower areas. Finally, I added shadows, which are cast at the same angle across all of the tiles. The shadows always bring everything to life and help create a sense of depth. illustrator
    uniE621 Small Lake
This was one of the terrain tile illustrations in the board game, Xorakus. It's a digital drawing that I made using Adobe software on the iPad Pro. After looking at a few reference images of small lakes from above, I sketched out a few rough outlines of where the land and water would be. Then I stole a bunch of the rocks I had drawn for another terrain tile called "Boulder Field" and pasted them in across the bottom of the lake and around some of the edges. Then I began adding color, starting with a deep beige-grey color because that's the color I wanted for those rocks. Then, I added several layers of semi-transparent blue-green for the water. The edge of each water layer traces its way around some of the rocks and they become progressively larger until the final layer is the size of the lake. This lets the viewer see all of the depth of that lake. I added a few white ripples across the surface of the water. Then, I began adding vegetation, like the little green tree shapes. Finally, I added shadows, which are cast at the same angle across all of the tiles. The shadows always bring everything to life and help create a sense of depth. illustrator
    uniE621 Crystal Spires
This was one of the terrain tile illustrations in the board game, Xorakus. It's a digital drawing that I made using Adobe software on the iPad Pro. I had several tiles in the game that were pretty recognizable types of terrain that exist on Earth, but the game is supposed to take place on an alien world, so "Crystal Spires" was one that was meant to be really alien terrain. I drew some inspiration from Superman's fortress of solitude, but I freehanded the spires, and the cliffs. I started with a tan background color. Then I began going back and forth with adding some trees, coloring the crystal, and adding shadow and highlights until it started to feel about right. As always, the shadows are cast at the same angle across all of the tiles and the shadows and highlights always bring everything to life and help create a sense of depth. illustrator
    uniE621 Xorakian City
This was one of the terrain tile illustrations in the board game, Xorakus. It's a digital drawing that I made using Adobe software on the iPad Pro. When I began this image, I had no idea how a Xorakian City looked, so it required a fair amount of concepting. I knew that the game was going to require a central "City" area, surrounded by an "Outskirts" area. It needed to be recognizable as a city, but also quite alien looking. I decided to replace the roads, highways, and bridges of a typical city with a bunch of bright green tube shapes. Another way that I made the city look more alien was that I made all of the buildings seem to flow up out of the landscape. The resulting city looks almost like a tangled root system. In order to make this alien tangle of structures look like a city, I added in all of the little reddish points of light. Then I added some of the little green tree shapes around the edges to connect this tile to some of the others. Finally, I added shadows, which are cast at the same angle across all of the tiles. The shadows and highlights always bring everything to life and help create a sense of depth. illustrator
    uniE621 Rocky Crags
This was one of the terrain tile illustrations in the board game, Xorakus. It's a digital drawing that I made using Adobe software on the iPad Pro. I freehanded the rocky terrain. When adding color I started with a deep beige-grey color because I wanted that to be the dominant color. Then, I added shadows to create a sense of depth. They are cast at the same angle across all of the tiles. I also added some highlights to really help those rock formations pop out. Finally, I added some vegetation, like the little green tree shapes and gave them shadows. illustrator
