uniE621 Customizable Wedding Reception Coasters - created for Truly Engaging
Objective: The ProductDesign team at Truly Engaging was tasked to create 40 new coaster designs in less than a week. My specific role was to design half of these coasters, and another teammate was to create the other 20. Description & Process: My coworker and I discussed witty messages and styles, then got to work! Collaborating with another person on this was helpful to solidify the artisticdirection, as there wasn't much time to explore design possibilities. Results: From initial product sketches to designing to website testing, I was able to finish 20 designs in about 4 business days. These have been a huge hit with summer weddings as customers can customize each design to add a personal touch to their weddingtrend decor.
    uniE621 Infographic Poster
Objective: After learning about informationdesign in college, I was tasked to apply that knowledge in the design of an infographic poster. Each poster needed to utilize specific elements such as small multiples, a primary graphic, and one smaller graph. Description: I wanted this poster to provide interesting information regarding a topic the general public may not know very much about. Because I was interested in Minnesota history and maps, I researched and designed this infographic about Minnesota lighthouses and the life of a lighthouse keeper. The map allows readers to quickly understand the general location of each light. Technical illustrations provide a realistic view of each lighthouse, and the numbers and corresponding silhouettes allow readers to gather quick information about each specific lighthouse. I believe this infographic is one of the few places where anyone can quickly gather information on all Minnesotan lighthouses.
uniE621 Magazine Spread - College Project
Objective: I was challenged to find an online article, find a magazine that would run it, and design the article according to that magazine’s brandstandards. The final layout needed to include body copy, a large image, and one small pull image. Description: I discovered an article on the L.L. Bean blog that described the importance of children playing outdoors, and I thought this article would fit well in Minnesota Monthly. This magazine emphasizes the “Spirit of Minnesota” by featuring shops, restaurants, recreation experiences, and general interest pieces from across the state. Because Minnesotans love the outdoors, I thought this article would appeal to readers of this magazine. Featuring moody photography and fresh type, this layout matches the fun-loving yet approachable feel that Minnesota Monthly does so well.
uniE621 Bachelorette Party Invitation - created at Truly Engaging
Objective: I was tasked to create 24 Bachelorette Party Invitation Cards, either converted from pre-existing templates or created completely from scratch. Description: Using a variety of artwork and pulling from common Bachelorette Party themes, I created these cards so every bride could find exactly what they wanted. Results: This invitation features my fun illustration of a margarita. (Customers can change the color depending on what flavor they prefer!) This quickly became a best-seller, as it truly invites party-goers to get ready for a great time.
uniE621 Valentine's Day Photo Card - created at Truly Engaging
Objective: As I reflected on the busyness of the holiday season, I realized sending a holidaycard may fall through the cracks for many Truly Engaging customers. However, during the holidays, customers are likely to take an updated family photo when everyone is together. Because of this, I proposed an update to this productline and thus created 12 new Valentine’s Day Cards. Description: While only one is pictured here, these new cards feature a variety of catch phrases and styles, so all customers from newlyweds to families could find something they love.
    uniE621 Pop-Up Book - Senior Thesis Project
Description: This pop-upbook was my featured piece at University of Northwestern’s Senior Design Show. A combination of fiction and nonfiction, the book is targeted towards children ages 6–10 and measures approximately 20 inches x 12 inches when opened. Titled Critters of the Great Barrier Reef, the story follows two siblings and their dog as they travel to Australia to learn about this amazing underwater ecosystem. The book is mostly factual, written approachably, with commentary and jokes by the siblings. Critters differs from other nature books by taking a deep dive into the specific species in the Great Barrier Reef, and what differentiates each from another similar species. In addition to the main pop-up featured on each spread, each page also has smaller, interactive pop-ups that further elaborate on the biodiversity in the Great Barrier Reef. Results: After approaching a few paperengineers, I’ve learned more about the process for printing, assembling, and binding a pop-up book. This book continues to be a work in progress, as I learn more about this medium. I am excited to see further development on this book in the future.
uniE621 Map Illustration - College Project
Objective: I was tasked to create a project for a nonprofit that needed some design help. I discovered the summer camp where I had previously worked had handed out maps designed in Microsoft Word. Those maps had several colors, strange line styles, and distracting clipart. I decided to create a new map design that would be more effective for wayfinding, whether large or pocket-sized. Description: From my experience at this camp, I knew I wanted to emphasize several important aspects: family, outdoors, and the nostalgic, summer camp vibes. I also wanted to create a visually compelling map without confusing and distracting clipart. I used playful fonts and bright colors to construct hierarchies, in order to communicate the information in a non-distracting way. A few colorful illustrations add some visual interest, while further differentiating roads and water. Small line illustrations support the handwritten font style and the nostalgic, camping spirit.
