Once upon in the Rig Vedic times (1500BC), Prajapati, a Brahman in his mid-forties, was unable to get a Son from his wife, Usas. In order to get a solution, he went to Ka, a supernatural figure created by Prajapati himself. He found Ka in a cave. Ka told Prajapati, “Behead your wife and behead that outcaste woman, Rudra. Put Usas’s head on Rudra’s body and Rudra’s head on Usas’s body.” Prajapati transposed both their heads, and got himself two wives.
Usas and Rudra served Prajapati, fulfilling their wifely duties.
They didn’t speak to each other much, but their gazes manifested the love they had for each other. Living together under the same roof, they were attracted to each other’s bodies, under a different head. The attraction soon grew manifold and Usas confessed her love to Rudra.
They started spending more and more time together, coming closer each day. But one day suddenly, Rudra got pregnant. The pregnancy of Rudra greatly troubled Usas. She stopped talking to Rudra.
Finally, one night, Rudra quietly came near Usas and laid next to her. It was made clear that even though they want each other, they could not consummate their love. Like the Sun and the Ocean, they could never come together. It would only mean destruction. It would mean change. Only an illusion could bring them together, like when the Sun set into the ocean, like the moment when shadows meet, making two lovers one. The false promise that they would come together one day is what kept them hopeful. One day they shall be together. One day, the world shall accept them. One day, this greed shall be overshadowed by kindness. One day, this cruelty will end. One day, this selfishness shall stop. One day, Prajapati shall go away forever. One day…
