STEPMOM ARTISTS of New York- Exhibition/Research Space with ChaShaMa

Immersive Media Artist Blakelee Pieroni is casting for “m OTHER”, a granted research/performance exhibit for stepmom artists in New York. This exhibit is in partnership with ChaShaMa. ChaShaMa helps create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world by partnering with property owners to transform unused real estate. These spaces are used for artists, small businesses, and for free community-centric art classes. We’re casting all art disciplines for a collaborative opportunity to create, perform, exhibit, and document the stepmom artist experience.

The exhibit runs from March 23-April 8th. During this time there will be several different executions in the gallery space. I intend for this to be a collaborative work where everyone is represented. Individual interviews will be held to document the artist’s/stepmoms on their experience navigating through step motherhood while maintaining their artistry. There will be multiple different performance art pieces and installations within the duration of the exhibition that each artist will participate in creating/executing.

There is a need for every type of art. The artists/ stepmoms need to be comfortable working while being filmed. This exhibition will be filmed in its entirety and made into an independent documentary film. Artists have full access to all content including the film for personal use and promotion. Your name and bio will be credited in the show and film along with full access to content for self promotion in a google drive.

The goal of this project is to bring an awareness to traditional family dynamics within our society and relate them directly to the stepmom experience. We will tackle the stigmas, inequality, underrepresentation, and core narratives that make this unique walk of life difficult. Historically, womxn and especially mothers speak about the loss of identity within motherhood. Their labor and efforts are undervalued and society forgets who they are. This is magnified when you are a stepmom. I believe it is the extreme pressure for an approved reputation that keeps this marginalized group of humans voiceless. This research space is for us, the kids will not be there. This space is to create, to work with other talented stepmoms in an element that is surrounded by who we are detached from the families we cohabitate with. It is important and we need to risk our reputations in order to change the stigma. I need numbers, I need an army.
