Job Responsibilities

Collaborate with editors and the SNMG design team to identify image needs for each story:

  • Research and gather images for daily news coverage
  • Obtain licensing and/or permissions for all images used
  • Crop and edit visuals for sciencenews.org
  • Create and edit graphics/diagrams/schematics using Science News styles
  • Organize spreadsheet of all images used with credit and source
  • Other assignments may include creating magazine pages using InDesign, preparing pages for print production, and compiling text-only versions of magazine issues

Qualifications

Job Specific

  • Familiar with editorial and creative image sources and stock sites (experience or appreciation of science is a plus)
  • Facility with managing image rights and licensing
  • Knowledge of web optimization and useability practices
  • Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Familiar with Slack, Google Sheets/Docs and Dropbox; experience with WordPress CMS is a plus.
  • Able to communicate clearly and collaborate while working in a fast-paced daily news environment
  • BA or BFA in graphic design, fine arts or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Required qualifications for all Society positions
  • Affinity for the mission of the Society for Science
  • Exceptional communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to develop rapport with colleagues and external clients

Position Type and Expected Hours

This is an hourly position of up to 20 hours/week from 10 am to 2 pm ET Monday through Friday.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a College or University or four years of related experience
