Job Description:

Groundswell is seeking creative and experienced Teaching Artists and Muralists with a commitment to community-based social justice work, to lead a variety of programs including after-school mural and multidisciplinary arts residencies, studio-based visual arts programs for teens, and community commissions.

Every Groundswell project follows a thoughtful process, guided by the vision of youth, community members, and artists. To ensure that every Groundswell project is a successful and authentic collaboration, we look for artists who are both technically skilled and rooted in principles of justice.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement youth-centered curricula connected to Social Justice, Youth Development, and Artistic Communication skills.
  • Create project work-plans based on in-depth research of community topics and social justice themes and that reflect input from Community Partners.
  • Teach discrete visual art skills such as visual literacy, color theory, and painting techniques and help youth synthesize these skills towards project goals.
  • Raise youth awareness of historical and contemporary connections between the arts and social change.
  • Foster youth development through activities that build self-awareness/confidence, personal planning goals (college/career), and the expansion of social/community networks.
  • Utilize projects to help youth see themselves as agents of change and valuable contributors to the public discourse on social justice.

Qualifications:

  • BA or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience (or related experience).
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent group facilitation, research, and public speaking skills.
  • Mastery of Visual Arts discipline (mural arts, digital/analog photo, video production, illustration, graphic design, animation, printmaking, fine arts).
  • Experience with community organizing, team building, community engagement event planning.
  • Must have flexible work schedule. Groundswell Teaching Artists work on a contractual/freelance basis. The majority of our projects take place M-F from 12pm to 7pm, and occasionally on weekends.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close and far.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and mouse, and lift files and reports is required.
  • Artist must be able to lift and carry at least 30 pounds.

Pay: From $30.00 per hour
