West Seattle Community Orchestras (WSCO) is now accepting applications for the position of Symphony Orchestra Conductor.

​WSCO is a thriving and growing community arts non-profit organization, having just celebrated its 20-year anniversary. We have four orchestral performing groups of varying levels of ability. We are somewhat unique in that we include both adults and students in our ensembles, according to ability. The ideal candidate for this part-time, contract position would be able to assume the responsibility for the artistic direction of our most advanced ensemble, the Symphony Orchestra (approximately 60 members).

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Select music to be performed for each concert in a timely fashion that allows the WSCO music librarian time to obtain the score/parts, and a review committee to approve said programs.
  • Attend and conduct rehearsals on Tuesday nights from 7:00pm-9:00pm at Chief Sealth International High School in West Seattle, from October through May.
  • Conduct three performances per season, generally in early December, March, and May.
  • Adjudicate auditions for musicians who are either new to WSCO or are wishing to advance from another ensemble.
  • Work closely and communicate with our Orchestra Manager, including quarterly check-in meetings. Ultimate accountability is to the WSCO Board of Directors.
  • Possible collaboration with outside groups and/or soloists. May include a concerto competition and incorporating the winner into the winter or spring concert.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience directing and programming for a symphony orchestra.
  • Familiarity in the demands and capabilities of the main orchestral musical instrument families – strings, woodwind, brass, percussion.
  • Familiarity with the standard orchestral repertoire, as well as a wide variety of styles and eras of music which is engaging to both the musicians and the audience alike.
  • An ability to build and maintain good rapport with students and adults.
  • An ability to communicate and work with the WSCO Board of Directors and Orchestra Manager.
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree or higher in Music.
  • Familiarity with the Seattle area music community.

Pay:

Pay for this contracted position starts at $200 per 2-hour rehearsal and concert. Any additional duties will be compensated at a negotiated rate.

  4. Several (2-3) sample programs from prior concerts/performances that you have conducted.
  • In-person interview (or video call) will be required for each final candidate.
  • References will be required for each final candidate.
  • Final candidates will be selected to program and conduct a trial concert cycle with the orchestra including 7 rehearsals, a dress rehearsal, and a performance. Conductor selection will be made by or before June, 2024.
  • A successful Washington State Background Check will be required.
