Job DescriptionSummary
Youth Theatre Music Director is responsible for teaching music and music performance for the assigned youth theatre production. The Youth Theatre Music Director must play the piano to accompany rehearsals and live shows, conduct a small pit band/orchestra and instruct the style of music required by each individual show. The Youth Theatre Music Director will work with participants grades 3-12.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have experience in teaching music and theatre.
- Must have experience in working with children of assigned age groups.
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
- Ability to plan and lead recreational activities for children in the assigned age group.
- CPR and First Aid certified (if not, must be willing to be certified through the Park District within two weeks of hire.) Certification must be from an accredited agency.
- Attend Champaign Park District bloodborne pathogen training within two weeks of hire.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Park District staff and the general public.
- Ability to teach the style of music required by each individual show.
- Must be able to conduct a small pit band/orchestra.
- Must be proficient in piano accompaniment for rehearsals and willing to play for live shows.
Supervision
The Youth Theatre Music Director is supervised by the Youth Theatre Program Director.

- Mandated reporter certification
- Facility training
Essential Functions
- Plan, organize and implement the music of the production for the Youth Theatre Program as assigned by the Youth Theatre Program Director.
- Attend a production meeting with the Youth Theatre Program Director and Producer before the start of each production and meet on a weekly basis with the Youth Theatre Program Director and Producer.
- Responsible for teaching the music of production.
- Responsible of music interpretation and music performance of the production.
- Train and supervise volunteers assigned or selected to assist with the music of the production.
- Maintain good public relations with participants, parents, other staff members, and the general public.
- Assist in the promotion of each production by doing live TV or radio spots.
- Maintain the program environment in a clean and orderly fashion.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for participants.
- Responsible for maintaining an open line of communication with the Youth Theatre Director regarding all situations concerning the program, participants, and staff.
- Communicate effectively with staff, participants, and parents.
- Responsible for following all Park District policies and procedures.
- Attend all required meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Responsible for safe and well-organized programs.
- Must be able to respond to problem situations in a mature manner and within the policies and procedures of the Champaign Park District.
Physiological Considerations
- The Youth Theatre Music Director may need to respond quickly and accurately.
- Must be able to physically active to lead activities and rehearsals.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed
Environmental Considerations
- May be exposed to all weather conditions including rain, wind, snow extreme temperatures, etc.

- Must be willing and able to improve skills and skill areas
- Must be able to assess situations and develop solutions to problems
- Must be able to exercise independent judgment and possess good safety awareness
