Educational Developer

The Education Developer will support the student experience of assessment and feedback at Cardiff University through the development and delivery of activities, initiatives, resources, and institutional projects designed to support enhancements in practice within these areas.

The role will involve working in partnership with schools and programme teams and in collaboration with specialist colleagues from the Learning and Teaching Academy as well as other professional departments to support assessment and feedback transformation across Cardiff University.

The role will include sharing effective practices and providing specialist advice and guidance to academic staff and Schools on approaches to assessment design, delivery, and management. It will also involve leading the design and delivery of continuing professional development events and resources across a range of assessment and feedback-related themes to support schools and programme teams to develop excellent quality, student-centred, inclusive, and engaging assessments and to provide consistent and high-quality feedback designed to support learning.

The postholder will provide expert advice and consultancy to senior managers and the academic community on matters relating to assessment and feedback and in response to the student voice.

This is a full-time post, fixed-term for one-year, and ideal as a secondment opportunity. Salary: £39,347 - £44,263 per annum (Grade 6)

Key Duties

  • Provide expert pedagogical advice and guidance to senior managers, academic staff, and Schools on holistic and innovative approaches to assessment and feedback design that enhance the student learning experience, supporting Schools with their implementation.
  • Play an active role in disciplinary and inter-disciplinary teaching and learning communities, working/project groups, and networks to support the delivery of strategic priorities relating to assessment and feedback, respond to the student voice, and ensure that all students at Cardiff have an excellent learning experience. This will involve leading on areas of expertise, where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of a suite of professional development events, workshops, resources, and other enhancement activities/events for Cardiff University staff across a range of assessment and feedback related themes, in alignment with quality assurance processes. This includes the provision of bespoke support for Schools and programme teams, where appropriate.
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently in relation to assessment and feedback where they fall within set role objectives.
  • Plan and deliver projects and initiatives in line with strategic priorities in assessment and feedback, coordinating and supervising project teams created as needed.
  • Support Senior Education Developers and academic Schools to plan, deliver, and implement institutionally impactful academic development and curriculum enhancement programs that fully integrate assessment and feedback considerations to enhance the student educational experience.
  • Raise the profile of excellence in learning and teaching internally and externally through communication, dissemination, and events.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links and networks with the University’s College, Schools, and professional service departments and outside bodies, as required, to support assessment and feedback enhancement.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of projects, workshops, and resources on assessment and feedback practices and the student learning experience, using findings to proactively change the design/delivery according to the needs of key stakeholders and to inform recommendations for future practice.
  • Undertake personal and professional development to enhance performance, keeping abreast of sector developments within assessment and feedback, engaging in pedagogic scholarship to support and enhance academic practice and curriculum development across the University and the higher education sector.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
  • Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • Substantial experience of supporting academics in the area of assessment and feedback and the enhancement of the student educational experience.
  • Able to demonstrate professional knowledge in the area of assessment and feedback, to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers, with an understanding of the current assessment and feedback issues within the UK and Welsh higher education sectors.
  • Experience of planning, designing, and delivering professional development workshops, events, and resources across a range of learning and teaching themes, including assessment and feedback.
  • Experience supporting learning, teaching, and assessment for delivery across a variety of contexts (e.g. blended learning, online learning, hybrid, work-based learning), demonstrating inclusive practice and effective use of technology-enhanced learning.
Customer Service, Communication, and Team Working
  • Evidence of ability to assimilate, analyse, and communicate complex information relating to learning, teaching, and the student experience in a clear, effective, tactful, and accurate manner appropriate to the audience, in both oral and written form, including to non-specialist audiences.
  • Evidence of ability to explore the needs of academic staff and students across a range of disciplines and to adapt advice, guidance, or support offering accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills coupled with the ability to work with staff and students; to work on own initiative as well as within a team; to build and maintain networks and to ensure dissemination of information.
Planning, Analysis, and Problem Solving
  • Evidence of ability to access and analyse a range of data from different information sources, to anticipate and resolve problems using initiative and creativity and identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions.
  • Evidence of the ability to plan, prioritise, and organise own work and to take responsibility for operational planning and implementation of project activities.

Desirable Criteria

  • Postgraduate/Professional qualification in learning and teaching.
  • Fellowship/Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.
  • Experience working with a professional body.
