Location: New York, United States
Contract: Full Time, Temporary
Your New RoleâŠ
CNN Digitalâs data and graphics team is looking for an interdisciplinary journalist who will help us do essential, creative, and groundbreaking journalism. The journalist will be part of the global data and graphics team and partner closely with their teammates and our other news desks to contextualize the news and cover stories about the most important issues of our time. They will help us find, report on, analyze and visualize data across beats, including breaking news and the intersections of policy, business, climate, health, inequity and more.
Applicants for this position should have experience reporting, working with data visualization and telling stories creatively, whether thatâs through dataviz, interactive features, webGL, or something else entirely. This is a position where you will be expected to pitch and develop your own stories as well as collaborate with others to create high impact visual and data-driven journalism. The role can be based out of any of CNNâs major US bureaus and remote work is a possibility.
Your Role AccountabilitiesâŠ
- Anticipate and prepare for breaking-news coverage needs for a wide variety of scenarios
- Assign and edit graphics and visuals, including charts, maps, interactives or other visual storytelling formats for breaking news stories and medium to long-term features
- Identify strong visual opportunities for data and graphics stories and features across other desks
- Review data, analyses, news graphics, data visualizations and interactive storytelling to ensure they uphold rigorous standards
- Edit data stories, including graphics and text
- Work closely with other desks to anticipate and create updating, live data graphics and maps for things like severe weather, earthquakes, wildfires, and more
Qualifications & ExperienceâŠ
- 7+ years experience, ideally in a newsroom or similar environment
- A desire to push storytelling forward and the ability to think creatively about how we use graphics and data in the service of journalism. You put the journalism first, have impeccable news judgment, and are always asking âwhatâs the best way to tell this story?â
- You are a varsity level communicator and feel as comfortable walking through a story pitch with editors as you do working closely with colleagues to create and shape a graphics project
- A reader-first perspective and strong commitment to multiplatform storytelling
- Lots of ideas about what would make our work more impactful, serve our audiences better, and how we can work more effectively
- Youâre comfortable working collaboratively, individually and with cross-functional teams
- Familiarity with the command line and Git
- Experience working with some combination of modern data and visualization tools, such as Illustrator, ai2html, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and related libraries (especially D3), R, Python, SQL, Excel, etc.
- Some familiarity with modern mapping tools (Arc, QGIS, MapBox, Maps4News, etc.)
- If you donât have every one of these skills, thatâs OK. We want to hear from candidates who are passionate about this work and could bring their unique vision and experiences to the role
