Founded in 1981 in partnership with whistleblowers, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is a nonpartisan independent watchdog that works to expose waste, corruption, abuse of power, and other instances where the government fails to serve the public. We champion reforms to achieve a more effective, ethical, and accountable federal government that safeguards constitutional principles. POGO has an over $7 million annual budget that supports a staff of over 50 employees.
POGO’s Investigations and Research team is looking to contract a talented Freelance Podcast Producer to co-produce season 2 of its investigative, six-episode podcast series, Bad Watchdog (https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/bad-watchdog/id1665650370). This investigative, character-driven series will be an immersive documentary style podcast that will be based on POGO’s high-impact reporting. The contracted Podcast Producer will work with the in-house investigative producer with both creative, i.e., storyboarding and scripting as well as technical aspects of the project, i.e., recording and mixing. Work will begin immediately through January 2024.
Responsibilities
- Scheduling and pre-interviewing podcast interview participants
- Technical support capturing remote and in-person interviews
- Collaborating with in-house investigative producer to storyboard the season
- Co-writing scripts for 5-6 episodes with consultation from Editorial Director, and Investigations and Research Director
- Working with in-house investigative producer to track and mix each episode
- Assisting in-house investigative producer with identifying music as well as the sound and feel of each episode
- Work with the in-house investigative producer to implement feedback on scripts and rough cuts from Editorial Director, Investigations and Research Director and our Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Panel
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in scriptwriting for radio or podcasts
- Minimum of 3 years mixing audio
- Demonstratable experience developing successful podcasts with complex subject matter for a wider audience
- Proficient in Pro Tools, Audition, or similar software to edit and mix
- Experience working on narrative podcasts
- Ability to work in a collaborative, respectful manner with diverse stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Investigative journalism experience
- Social Justice reporting experience
Contract Details, Pay Rate, and Other information:
This short-term contract work is for 6 podcast episodes and available immediately.
Compensation rate starts at $45 per hour with a 30-35 hour/week cap, with possible adjustments up to $50 per hour commensurate with experience.
Work under this contract is to be conducted remotely, does not qualify the consultant for any benefits, and requires the consultant to handle all tax matters.
