Senior Back-End Developer – Freelance Assignment
The Taunton Press is a distinguished media company known for producing high-quality content aimed at enthusiasts in various fields such as woodworking, home improvement, gardening, and sewing. With a diverse portfolio of websites, we are currently seeking a talented Back-End Developer to work with our dynamic team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in ensuring the smooth operation of our suite of websites, supporting server infrastructure, optimizing WordPress platforms, and integrating third-party applications to elevate user experience.
Description:
As a Back-End Developer supporting the team at The Taunton Press, you will be entrusted with the critical task of enhancing our suite of websites by supporting server infrastructure, optimizing WordPress platforms, and seamlessly integrating third-party applications. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including designers, front-end developers, and project managers, you will contribute your expertise to create cohesive and user-friendly online experiences.
We work with WordPress as a CMS and front end but integrate with other services on the AWS platform, identity providers, consumer marketing platforms, and search vendors.
Assignment:
You will optimize WordPress themes and plugins, collaborating with front-end developers to create a seamless user experience. You’ll also identify and integrate third-party applications and APIs to enhance website capabilities, working closely with cross-functional teams for successful implementation. Your technical collaboration with the development team will ensure alignment between back-end systems and front-end functionalities, contributing to an improved overall user experience. Additionally, you’ll focus on back-end development, managing server operations, database, and application logic efficiently. You’ll support responsive design implementations in coordination with the design team, guaranteeing consistent user experiences across devices. Lastly, you’ll use your problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve technical issues, bugs, and performance bottlenecks, ensuring smooth website operations.
Qualifications:
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Proven experience as a Back-End Developer, with a strong portfolio showcasing web development projects and WordPress expertise.
- Proficiency in relevant back-end programming languages (e.g., PHP, Node.js).
- Demonstratable experience of design, development, query & database optimization of SQL (e.g., Aurora, MariaDB, MySQL) and NoSQL (DynamoDB, MongoDB) databases
- Familiarity with server management and cloud platforms (AWS, Cloudflare.).
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Experience with Linux and the associated services used for web applications
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
- Experience with containerization platforms such as Docker
- Experience with enterprise-grade search such as ElasticSearch, Solr, or Lucene
- Familiarity with version control systems (Git) and agile development methodologies.
- Knowledge of SEO best practices and website optimization techniques.
- Experience with WordPress optimization and management.
- Familiarity with integrating third-party APIs and applications.
- Understanding of responsive design principles and front-end development.
