Job Description

Crewe Town Council is seeking to collaborate with an artist or collective to research, develop, and produce a mural that celebrates Crewe’s industrial histories and heritage of making, while also exploring the dominant railway engineering narrative. The mural will be located on the side of the town council offices and will be part of a wider Crewe Arts Trail, alongside UKSPF funded commissions that are being developed. Community engagement is central to this project, which aims to tell Crewe’s unique story through public art in an imaginative and accessible way. This role is managed by Counterculture Partnership LLP on behalf of Crewe Town Council.

Requirements

Artists must meet the following requirements for this role:

  • Develop a response to the theme “Making Crewe” that focuses on the town’s industrial history and heritage.
  • Participate in a minimum of 5 project meetings and maintain close collaboration and communication with the project team and the Town Council.
  • Conduct research and development to design the artwork, including revisions as needed based on feedback from the project team and stakeholders.
  • Implement and install the final artwork, ensuring it adheres to health and safety checks and is resilient to varying weather conditions.
  • Deliver 5 community engagement activities, including creative workshops or artist talks.
  • Provide all materials, equipment, and production costs, including insurance and travel costs.
  • Ensure the artwork is bold, visually impactful, and uniquely reflective of Crewe.
  • Consider and take steps to limit the risk of vandalism to the final artwork.

Responsibilities

A total fee of £12,000 is available for all design, engagement, and production activities. The distribution of this budget is anticipated to be 40% for artist fees and 60% for materials, installation, and travel. Responsibilities include:

  • Attending project meetings.
  • Collaborating on design and community engagement.
  • Finalizing the mural design and overseeing its production and installation.
  • Ensuring all safety and quality standards are met.

Key Dates & Timeline

  • Closing date for applications: 9am, 14th November 2024
  • Artist Interviews: week commencing 9th December 2024
  • Project initiation meeting: week commencing 6th January 2025
  • Final designs to be agreed by end of January 2025
  • Public Launch of the design: 14th February 2025
  • Community engagement during the launch weekend: 14-16 February 2025
  • Installation: March 2025

Application Procedure

Artists must submit the following informatio by 9am, 14 November 2024:

  • A response to the brief focusing on community engagement, no longer than 2 sides of A4.
  • A budget breakdown into artist fees, fabrication, travel, and materials.
  • An up-to-date CV including relevant qualifications and experience.
  • A portfolio of previous work related to the application (e.g., web link or up to 4 pages of images).
  • Two references from previous mural art and/or public art projects.

Interviews will occur online, with the time arranged to accommodate the artists’ schedules. Interview questions will be provided in advance.
