Job Description

Job Title: Junior Web Developer

Advertised Salary: £27,220 + benefits

Location: Remote with intermittent travel to our Birmingham or Milton Keynes hubs.

Every role across the Trust plays its part in transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and feel better, bringing wellbeing benefits to millions. We are looking for an enthusiastic, technology-savvy Junior Web Developer to join our web team. You will work with the website technology manager and the web team to build, enhance, and maintain the Trust’s public-facing websites and other customer and supporter-focused digital platforms. You will help ensure the websites and other platforms are accessible and function securely, with all data safeguarded and minimal downtime.

This role would suit a dedicated and enthusiastic student of web development who is looking to make a start in their web development career. The role will be based working from home, with the allocation of a nearby Hub for collaborative working (once/twice per month) in Birmingham or Milton Keynes. It is essential that you can work effectively from home while also having the flexibility to be mobile when necessary.

Joining our web team will give you a fantastic opportunity to learn about and apply web development within a charity context while developing your problem-solving, communication, and project management skills. You will be able to train and support colleagues and members of the public to use our website effectively. Requirements

Core Responsibilities:

  • Support the Web team to build, maintain and enhance website functionality as requested to meet customer, supporter, and internal stakeholder needs.
  • Ensure safe, secure, and accessible functioning of the websites, resolving bugs and downtime in a timely manner.
  • Respond to and resolve queries from colleagues, stakeholders, customers, and supporters positively and promptly.
  • Provide training for colleagues and volunteers on website features.
  • Help test and quality-check new code from the team and external developers.
  • Work with external developer resources as needed to deliver agreed website projects.
  • Advise on best practices in digital technology and innovation.
  • Research and present ideas on how new digital technologies can benefit our audiences.
  • Gather requirements from colleagues on changes and enhancements to website functionality.

About You:

  • Understanding of: PHP7+, JavaScript ES6+, HTML+CSS, SQL, Git SCM.
  • Knowledge of Postgres & Mysql administration, REST and HTTP principles, Docker Container administration, Python or GO, Linux (Debian or Ubuntu) administration is beneficial but not required.
  • Strong communication skills - able to explain web technologies to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Enthusiasm for digital tools and technologies, particularly in a charity environment.
  • Open-minded, flexible, and possess a problem-solving mentality.
  • Organised with strong attention to detail and able to manage time effectively.
