Beauty image shot on location in a private home.
This contemporary fashion/beauty project was shot in a private home near Atlanta, GA USA.
The challenge for me was to limit where the light went in this very small room. By keeping the Lantern close to the model, and using the blackout skirt, I was able to have a lot of light on the model and due to the inverse square rule of light, I was able to keep the rest of the scene relatively dark.
The disadvantage is when the model moved a small amount closer or farther away from the light source, it changed the light intensity on the model. This is not a big deal if you understand light AND are careful to pay attention to the distance the model is to the light. Consequently I moved the light a lot throughout the shoot.

On location Fashion photography shot in Zona Tortona in Milan.
This on location advertising Fashion photograph was shot in Milan, Italy 1 block over from Via Tortona, a major fashion and model agency street, near the Porta Genova train station.
This was obviously shot at night and I used a battery powered strobe to add some Pop to the model and garment.

On this project I did not know for sure what the light/weather was going to do, which is not uncommon for summer in the southeast USA, so I brought a wide selection of lighting gear:
A Sunbounce roller bag with reflectors, silks, boom sticks w/grip heads,
a case of Lumedyne strobe gear,
3 1000 & 5 500 watt hot lights, 2 with softboxes,
several "C" stands,
sand bags,
apple boxes,
a bag of cameras with 7 lenses,
plus a fluid head with CF sticks.
In other words, a lot of gear.
I walked into the home and said hello to Emily, the model, and Sav, the make up artist and hair stylist. When shooting any image with models, it is important to make the model feel comfortable with everyone on the set. After saying hello, I then looked to see where I wanted to shoot.
Knowing that I wanted dramatic light (High contrast), I noticed in the living room there was a French door that had great soft light washing into the house. So after dragging a mountain of lighting gear to the shoot's location, I only needed 4 small items: The tripod, the fluid head, one camera and one lens.
Oh, the chair we were going to use for the model to sit in, it was too high making the hair "Hat" even with one of the picture frames in the background, so I used an apple box of the for the model to sit on and I used another apple box for me to sit on.
There was a table with a lamp and shade plus another decorative item on the right side of the photo/video, so I asked a crew member to move them out of the frame.
I directed Emily for each clip so I could have a selection of different looks: Lean forward, roll the head to give different angles, put her right hand behind her neck, slowly look to her left of the camera and to avoid looking into the camera. Fortunately for us, Emily is primarily an actress so she takes direction very well.
The stylist had her in a strapless black dress and I shot about 100 images and I was not thrilled with any of them.
After stopping and analyzing the images, I realized I just did not like how the dress made her shoulders and arms look.
So the stylist changed her into the fabulous little black dress you see in the the photo and video.
After she sat down to shoot with the new dress, Sav checked the make up and hair and gave me the go ahead: 155 still images, 6 video clips and 13 minutes later, we were done.

Fashion photography in Como, Italy
This fashion shot was taken in The Palace Hotel, now a Villa d'Este property in Como, Italy, during a remodeling in Como, Italy in 1985, within 2 weeks after I moved there.
This hotel has a residential side as well as a hotel side. This staircase led to the residences. The wardrobe pulled by the wardrobe stylist was amazing as was the location. The make up artist, Francis, and the hair stylist, Gary, were very good at their craft. To me the candelabra prop was one of the keys of the success of this image.

This fashion editorial image was shot in Milan, Italy.
An acquaintance told me about this location and he got us into the building. We were not supposed to be here so we moved and shot as quiet and as quickly as we could. The building was in a state of disrepair and had "Stuff" laying about.
I loved the glass door but If I exposed for the model, the glass would have been 100% a blow out, totally white with no detail, you would have seen the frame, but that would have been it. So I asked my crew to put the strobe together so I could use the strobe light to "Overpower" the sunlight coming from the huge glass windows.
Do not think just having a strobe will fix all of your lighting problems... it will not. Adjusting the strobe position, how close/far the strobe is from the model, the strobe power setting, deciding on the quality of light you want from the strobe, what the ISO you set the camera to, what f stop you use and shutter speed all have to be considered and adjusted correctly.
The term "Quality of light" is the range from very hard to very soft, in this image it is very soft light.

This intense fashion portrait was shot as part of a fashion project shot in Milan, Italy for an american client.
We are in what most Americans would consider to be a very narrow alley when in fact it is a street and connects, about 200 feet (61 meters) to the right, into one of Milan's original 7 streets. So we are in "Old Town" Milano.
I shoot on this location often as the light, backgrounds, ease of use, lack of traffic makes it just great to use. You would need to be brain dead to not be able to shoot something cool during the day in this location, it is just a little gift I found in Milano.
