uniE613 Steve and the Sea - { Home } EP
Whenever I release music, I use it as an excuse to turn it into a major creative project beyond just the music. For my second EP, I produced an animated video, artwork for the EP and a single, and screen printed t-shirts. https://youtu.be/IhTYy7pfF38?si=YrHuboiT9Y7b4Fc3 My second EP, written and recorded 2019-2020, released 10th April 2020. After a long break since my last music release, I ventured back in to recording and releasing a new EP. I took my time to create something that reflected what I was experiencing at the time; moving to a new place, separation and contemplation. I went through multiple iterations of how the EP would come together until eventually the songs started coming together, and the true identity of the EP came to light. { Home } – almost accidentally – became a collection of songs that reflected how I was feeling about being in a new place, far from friends, whilst also considering what being a “home” really is. It featured songs about experiences of being almost housebound with anxiety, about empathy for someone else’s home sickness, and about having to face a tough decision about where I would call “home”. Initially, I’d intended on calling the EP “Field Notes”, and would create a collection of full songs and unfinished ideas that were created over a period of time. I took inspiration from old scientific illustrations and the shells I’d collected on Brighton beach. I had plans to create hand printed cases from blocks of wood I’d found (which I later realised had come from Brighton Palace Pier). However as { Home } came together (and as I realised how expensive physical copies would be), I found the artwork still reflected the idea; shells are often seen as the “homes” of the animals that inhabit them, living down by the sea. Here’s a full “making of” video describing the process of putting the video together. https://youtu.be/yZgzqRXbB1o?si=fNc3V11LQN0U8pFl
    uniE613 EMDR Association
EMDR therapy is a revolutionary new method in psychotherapy that has been growing in popularity. I worked with EMDR UK to create animated explainer videos to help clarify some details about the process and potential effectiveness. https://vimeo.com/412256006 I was approached by EMDR Association to create two animations detailing their therapy services; one for their children’s services and another for adult services. Given the personal nature of EMDR therapy, we decided to make the animation character-centric. In particular, the aim was to focus on changing emotions and feelings. It would be necessary for the characters to express clearly a range of emotions to demonstrate the effects of EMDR therapy. While the association worked on a script, I worked on character development. Character design and animation is an area I rarely explore, so this took some experimentation and several revisions. it was important not just that the characters suited the story, but that the illustration style also suited the mood of the animation. This was followed by more animation testing to explore changing facial expressions. https://vimeo.com/416946424 Finally, this went on to full animation. The final results were the adult animation shown above, and the children’s animation shown below. https://vimeo.com/412258526
    uniE613 Sabre Awards
When a global pandemic forced the PR Industry's most prominent conference and awards ceremony online, a PowerPoint slide simply wouldn't do. A collaboration of motion designers, 3D animators, video editors, cinematographers and streaming specialists came together to help keep the event vibrant and exciting for attendees around the world. In 2020, as the world was grappling with a pandemic, many major events were cancelled to keep the public safe. In such a time of crisis, many were forced to think fast for alternative solutions, both to protect those who depended on these events for their livelihood, but to help keep up people's spirits by bringing people together and creating exciting events that could be enjoyed in the safety of our own homes. That's when James Beer reached out to me to support him with the PRovoke Media SABRE Awards. https://youtu.be/m4cS18qPnUQ?si=V9LxKYnR52xNH0UV Awards presentations The first major job for me for this project was producing short animations to accompany each award. This started with creating an animated template from a provided static design, which was then filled with the information and images for each award, with animation then timed to a provided voice over. Initially this was a long and laborious task, with each ceremony including over 100 awards, and each award including up to five finalists, each with an image, campaign name and company/agency name. However, as we progressed through the year into different ceremonies, I worked out ways to use databases and automation to build the compositions, meaning I could focus on the finer details, visual effects and timing. https://vimeo.com/957321370 https://youtu.be/XPTIXmWJf-o?si=YtElMutS4x2q0vhH Video editing As the restrictions eased and PRovoke were able to bring people back together in person for the SABRE Awards, my role shifted too. Each event has a film crew in attendance to capture the day, which is then cut together to create a highlight reel to showcase the intrigue, excitement and energy of the day. https://youtu.be/KKsyDAj2uaI?si=mhrQD4epbjGxjun4 https://youtu.be/iRVFgmopxus?si=kca6PNo_iHOsNgFY https://youtu.be/0mJCuk3Oh4s?si=CRwfgziZvibSOqG6
uniE613 Origin of Symmetry XX RemiXX
When you’re asked to produce some social content for a band that influenced your taste in music since you were 11 years old, you don’t say no. So when F-That reached out to me to help with their content creation for Muse’s upcoming release of their remixed album, naturally I jumped at the chance. Origin of Symmetry was a defining album for me, and creating work for this remixed 20th anniversary edition brought back a lot of nostalgia. The core of the job involved creating 3D mock-ups of the vinyl from the supplied artwork, including both still images and animations to be used on online stores and social media. https://www.instagram.com/p/CPoLs7UhGcJ These 3D mock ups were created in Cinema 4D and rendered in Octane to create a photo-realistic quality. Particular attention was paid to the material of the translucent coloured vinyl; quite a challenge without physical copies to refer to! Before these were released however, in typical Muse style we released a subtle Spotify Canvas to build up some hype and offer clues to eagle-eyed fans of what was coming (which was not missed by their famously dedicated fanbase). https://imgur.com/a/tj26mmD As a final element, we created a visualiser video for YouTube, for the release of Megalomania; the final track on the album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVpqdK-GKa4 This was created in After Effects and Photoshop, using cut out layers of the artwork arranged in 3D space, composited with footage of sunny and stormy skies to capture the atmosphere of the song itself. https://imgur.com/a/1d0CKIH
    uniE613 A-Tota-So – ‘I Am’
When my friends in A-tota-so approached me to ask for a music video for their new single, I jumped at the chance as soon as I heard the song. I am is a beautiful melodic piece that meanders through emotive episodes that wax and wane into a climactic eruption of distorted guitars, strings and powerful vocals (provided by Aisling Whiting of the band Sang Froid). https://vimeo.com/655277922 Initially, we discussed creating something simple, possibly modular that could be put together quickly. Perhaps an extension of the 3D art I’d been experimenting with before. But the more I played with the idea, the more it grew into a major animation piece that explored nature, life, death, change and magic. Inspired by Simon J Curd’s stunning artwork for the band’s upcoming album, I experimented with an idea revolving around a well in a forest; a single point around which the seasons, cycles, trials and tribulations of the forest play out. Working in Cinema 4D, I experimented with various toon shaders before settling for Octane’s GPU rendering speed – something quite critical when dealing with thousands of tree branches, leaves and blades of grass, with some scenes containing over 500,000 polygons! As I continued experimenting, the video eventually developed a subtle story that follows the dynamics of the music. The forest breaks out of a bleak autumnal scene into a vibrant summer, before falling into a dark and stormy night. Throughout the piece, small sprites explore the forest, lighting up their surroundings, performing their dances around the well, bringing about change, life, and ultimately destruction. This project was far more extensive than anything I have worked on previously, especially in 3D. I’m very much still learning the process, and this job was a huge learning opportunity for me. For example, character – and especially animal – animation is very difficult! And I definitely could have made the process easier for myself with better project management such as using layers and incremental saving, and I suppose more advanced planning along the way! Here’s a little more of a behind-the-scenes look into animation process: https://vimeo.com/655873980
uniE613 Biffy Clyro – The Myth of the Happily Ever After
I was invited by F-That to produce some short-form content for one of my all time favourite bands Biffy Clyro, to promote their huge new album The Myth of the Happily Ever After. https://www.instagram.com/p/CVU2wj8odT6 The work included renders of a 3D model and animation of the special edition vinyl which includes an art print and a CD, featuring Thomas Robson‘s stunning artwork. This was then pieced together with footage from the band’s short film/double music video to create social and advertising content to promote the album.
uniE613 Dozy Jane - Different Shades of Green
Dozy Jane's music video needed an extra layer of depth and emotion. With some careful post processing and VFX, I was able to bring the footage to life. https://youtu.be/A4lz4N7aZzE?si=W-zQpW8nWzClPDZ_ Dozy Jane's music transcends genres to create emotive soundscapes. When I saw that she was looking for help with a music video, I reached out to see if I could help. Together we added new life and mood to the footage that had already been filmed and spliced. This edit included some careful keying to separate layers out of the footage so that floating particles could be added in, followed by grading and post processing to set the tone of the video and add new qualities. The end product was a dramatic shift away from the original footage. https://vimeo.com/957693460
    uniE613 New Ghost visualisers
With 3D space and gentle animation, these single covers come to life in these music visualisers. New Ghost have been building a name for themselves on the UK post-rock scene for the last few years. Close friends of mine, I've been enjoying their music and it's been so nice to watch them grow from their humble beginnings; emerging from the ashes of a selection of the best Sheffield bands. In fact, I was there at the very first practice together and almost joined the band myself, but had to hand over my position as I was due to move away. So when Chris came to me and asked if I could produce some animated visualisers and lyric videos for the band, I was happy to be able to finally put my mark on the band. Especially after I saw the amazing single artwork supplied by Wou Wou and the Wormling. https://youtu.be/IwZ-fwGL8AY?si=L9t_OboBljbyvGG9 For these videos, I took apart the supplied Photoshop files and arranged them in 3D space, to give the scene depth. Then with some displacement, particles and camera movement, I brought the scenes to life, along with some text animation to introduce the lyrics. https://youtu.be/yJKHMn8QdhA?si=cGmrXLV7zSMVVnYh
